Beyond the Seven Chakras: Understanding the Twelve-Chakra Model

Most people who've encountered chakras before know the familiar seven-centre model — root through crown, running roughly along the spine. Less commonly discussed is that several later frameworks extend that model further, describing additional centres beyond the crown and below the root, often gathered under a "twelve-chakra" or "12D" label. It's an expansion of the same basic idea, not a replacement for it.

The extra centres in most twelve-chakra models sit above the head and below the feet, and are usually described as relating to a wider sense of connection — to the earth on one end, and to something more expansive on the other. As with the seven-chakra model itself, none of this is empirically verified in the way a physical organ is; it's a working framework practitioners use to organise attention and practice, not a claim of anatomical fact.

A chakra "clearing" session, in this expanded model, works much like a clearing session in the more familiar seven-chakra approach — moving attention, and depending on the practitioner, hands-on or energetic technique, through each centre in turn, noticing where things feel congested, blocked or unusually active, and working with that directly. The twelve-centre version simply covers more ground, and tends to take longer as a result.

This kind of work tends to suit people who've already done some grounding or general energy practice and are looking for something more targeted, rather than a starting point for someone brand new to energy work, which is better served by a simpler practice first.
